Description:
Large, slim, elongated bird, both male and female are quite colorful. Male red and black, with red wing patch extending as narrow panel along tertials and secondaries. Underparts are a scarlet-red, and black throat. Female has yellow wash on forehead and supercilium and pale yellow throat and breast.
Distribution:
Common summer visitor to central parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, mainly Gilgit, Skardu and Astore districts. Prefers open forest types, including broadleaf and pine/fir forests and edges; in winter largely groves and wooded cultivation, at 900-3600m.
Behavior:
Forages chiefly in canopy; gleans, makes aerial sallies, and hovers in front of flowers. May form large flocks outside breeding season. Eats chiefly insects, including orthopterans, hymenopterans, beetles, flies and insect larvae, also spiders; also takes buds and fruits.
